The Offering

A working winery, a family home and an approved next chapter. One sale.

Since 2012, founder and winemaker Andrzej Lipinski has built Big Head Wines into one of the most decorated names in Ontario wine. You take over the land, the buildings and the operating business together: 30.45 acres in Niagara-on-the-Lake, a purpose-built winery making about 24,000 cases a year, and a large wine club that already buys direct.

Most owners spend a decade building a brand, a following and a production floor. Here all three are already working. You walk in, keep the momentum and decide how big the next chapter gets.

The family behind Big Head

He didn't know anything about wine. Then he built the winery behind Ontario's Red Wine of the Year.

Andrzej Lipinski left Poland in 1989, already married, to give his family a better future. “That time was a little bit tougher in Poland,” he says. “There was not really freedom.”

He started at a winery doing whatever he was asked, and they liked his work. He didn't know anything about wine at the time. He worked to one rule: “Whatever you do, you have to do right, or don't do it.”

By the time he founded Big Head in 2012, people already liked the way he made wine. “So I knew whatever I make, I can sell it.” Since then he has won the Karl Kaiser Canadian Winemaker Award, and in 2024 Big Head took Ontario Red Wine of the Year and Best Chenin Blanc in the World.

The story of Big Head Wines · 4 min · Andrzej and Jakub Lipinski
Read the transcript
0:11
Andrzej: So my name is Andrzej Lipinski. I am the winemaker and owner of Big Head Winery.
0:27
Andrzej: I'm Polish, emigrated in '89. I was already married. I want to change and want to get a better future for my family, and that time was a little bit tougher in Poland, as the situation was socialist, so there was not really freedom.
0:49
Andrzej: I start working at the winery, you know, doing whatever they asked me to do. I was doing, and they liked it. And I didn't know anything about the wine at that time.
1:02
Andrzej: Whatever you do, you have to do right, or don't do it.
1:07
Andrzej: Starting winery is always like any business: is risk. I had already following, that people like the way I make the wine. So I knew whatever I make, I can sell it.
1:22
Andrzej: [Andrzej walks through the expansion plans: another tasting room, another cellar, an underground cellar for wine aging and, on the top, another floor for events and restaurants.]
1:56
Andrzej: I want to leave something for my family, for my kids. This is the winery building. I am very proud. This is what I live for, pretty much. And it keeps me going.
2:08
Andrzej: So I want to have that people also remember what I've done. So remember me as a... not average winemaker, some of the top winemaker.
2:22
Andrzej: My son has a great palate as a sommelier. He has a big knowledge about the wine.
2:37
Jakub: My name is Jakub Lipinski, I'm the Managing Director of Big Head Wines, my family's winery.
2:42
Jakub: Growing up with a father that loves winemaking was interesting. Harvest was always fairly chaotic, many dinners spent inside the cellar.
2:55
Jakub: Working side by side with my father, I understand our legacy to be hard work and passion.
3:02
Jakub: We don't cut any corners. We make sure that quality is a focus at every step, because as soon as you start cutting corners you can taste it, you can sense it. We've built up such a strong bond with our audience that a slip would become noticeable.
3:17
Jakub: The future of Big Head Wines is worldwide. We are currently doing exceptionally well in Ontario and across Canada, we're in Quebec and other provinces, but exposing ourselves to other markets, getting into Europe, getting into Asia, South America: those are all places that I think we can do well. It's just getting into those markets that we're working through.
3:43
Jakub: The ideal person I see taking over Big Head is someone that prioritizes quality, someone that is passionate about making the best wine possible, and they will do everything they can to make sure that that's the case.
Andrzej: from Poland to the top

The next chapter

“The ideal person I see taking over Big Head is someone that prioritizes quality, someone that is passionate about making the best wine possible.”

Jakub Lipinski, Managing Director

You don't start from zero here. You take over a brand a founder spent his life building, a winemaking standard that has already won Ontario Red Wine of the Year, and wine club members who already buy direct. The family has done the hard part. You carry it forward.

The Estate

30.45 acres in Canada's premier cool-climate wine region.

The estate sits on Line 6 Road near Virgil, in the middle of Niagara-on-the-Lake's wine country. Vines run out from the buildings, a cedar-lined lane runs through them, and the winery, the courtyard and the residence sit together at the heart of the land.

You get room to grow, room to host and an address on the route wine tourists already drive every weekend.

The Winery & Production

Purpose-built to make about 24,000 cases a year.

The production side was built for the way this team makes wine: a fermentation hall of concrete tanks and clay amphorae, a row of large oak fermenters, stacked barrels, a bottling line, a covered crush pad and case storage, with production and storage rooms, two offices and staff areas around them.

You are not buying a plan for a winery. You are buying one that is already running, so the next vintage can start in your hands. Equipment and inclusions are set out in the confidential package.

  • Barrels & oak fermenters
  • Bottling line

Tasting Room & Hospitality

Where the wine club comes home.

Guests walk in under arched windows to a 734 sq ft tasting bar, a bottle shop wall and a 1,259 sq ft hospitality and dining area set among olive trees, with leather banquettes along the vineyard wall.

Sales here are driven direct to the consumer, through a large wine club membership. The customer relationship is already built, and it stays with the winery when you take the keys.

  • 1,259 sq ft dining
  • Bottle shop
  • Commercial space

At dusk the arched windows glow across the courtyard and the room under the olive trees fills with warm light. It is the picture your guests carry home, and the reason they come back.

The open courtyard out front, with its tent frame, gives you room to host outdoors when the season allows.

The Wines

The awards come with the address.

Andrzej Lipinski founded Big Head in 2012 and made it one of the most recognized names in Ontario wine. In 2024 alone the winery took Ontario Red Wine of the Year and Best Chenin Blanc in the World.

You inherit a label that judges and members already know, sales that run direct to the consumer, and a soon-to-be-established LCBO presence that opens the next channel.

Built out, the winery grows to 32,586 square feet. The design work is done and the plans are approved, so you decide when to break ground and how the new rooms earn their keep.

Live where you work. Without living at work.

A private residence sits on the estate beside the winery: about 2,636 sq ft on the main floor and a 1,915 sq ft finished lower level, with 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a den and a loft.

The kitchen and great room open under a beamed, vaulted ceiling around a stone fireplace. Downstairs there is a wine cellar and room for recreation, and an attached garage. Your commute is the walk across the courtyard.

Pool & Grounds

A private backyard behind a working winery.

Behind the house: a private in-ground pool inside its own fence with a covered cabana, a cedar-ceilinged pavilion for dinners outside and a wide lawn running toward the vines.

The winery stays on the other side of the fence. Evenings out here belong to you.

The Land & Services

From the gate you are about 7 minutes from Virgil, 15 from Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake and 17 from Niagara Falls. Toronto is roughly 1.5 hours away, and Buffalo and the major Southern Ontario markets are close.
